Whalesuit-up, we’re off to the sea!

Whale watching companies are widespread along the coast, so we thought we’d give it a go and try and see some of the resident whales around Victoria. And we got lucky! We had a whole parade of orcas passing us, with male, female, old and young ones.

There’s complicated regulations on how close you’re allowed to get to them, the motor has to be off as soon as you get within a certain distance, you cannot cross their tracks and so on. Luckily, one of them decided to do a little tourist watching and came to look at our boat. We couldn’t back off because there were some whales behind us, too, so there’s some nice killer whale close-ups for you. Absolutely breathtaking!

I could also add harbour purpoises to my Canadian wildlife sightings. Unfortunately, they are very shy and disappear as soon as a boat is approaching, so no great pictures there. The shiny things that look like rocks on the picture below are seals.

We met a harbour seal up close on our way back.

There are a few seals that turn up right at the dock of Fisherman’s Wharf and you can buy fish to feed them.

Not that “wild” but totally adorable.
